Five Rat Ladies
Inspiration
This one is simply about our five pet rats — my wife's girls, first and foremost, though they've claimed the whole house. Jumpy, Luna, Cleo, Dotty, and Kira are their real names, and the verses are loosely inspired by their actual personalities. Fancy rats don't live long, so they go from tiny chaos agents to little old ladies faster than you'd expect. I wanted to capture that arc: the mischief, the character, and the quiet grace of watching them grow old together.
Lyrics
I had five rat ladies in a little borrowed home Jumpy, Luna, Cleo, Dotty, Kira of my own Five bright pairs of eyes on me, five shadows at my feet Five tiny queens of mischief making every day complete Dotty was the little one, the smallest in the race Luna loved a hidden snack and wore a happy face Kira slipped through any gap and ran where she should not Jumpy sprang from shelf to shoulder quicker than a thought And I'd say, "Now take it easy, girls, there's plenty time to run" But they never cared for orders, they were busy having fun Oh my five rat ladies Sing it soft and sing it loud Oh my five rat ladies Always made me glad and proud From the jumping and the stealing To the old girls sleeping late Oh my five rat ladies You made this house a better place Jumpy leapt before she thought and landed on my back Kira found a way to wander off and never missed a track Luna came for cuddles first and stayed when days were long Dotty slipped through any gap like nothing could go wrong Cleo watched us from the corner like a captain out at sea With her pirate little face saying, "Leave the ship to me" And they all would take my shoulder, each in her different way Five soft-hearted troublemakers filling up my days And I'd say, "You'll grow to grand old dames with dignity and grace" They'd kick the bedding in the air and dash off round the place Oh my five rat ladies Sing it soft and sing it loud Oh my five rat ladies Always made me glad and proud From the jumping and the stealing To the old girls sleeping late Oh my five rat ladies You made this house a better place Now the years have made them gentler, though not one has lost her soul Now they take their naps like legends who have paid their ragged toll Luna loves her comfort still and Dotty's always small Jumpy still looks set for liftoff, Kira climbs above us all Cleo is a pirate still, bold and self-assured With that bright and splendid patchwork look still written in her eyes Black and white and grey and brown all gathered in one place And when they sleep together close, the whole room turns to grace Oh my five rat ladies Sing it soft and sing it loud Oh my five rat ladies Still the best I've had around From the little wild beginners To the old girls full of grace Oh my five rat ladies You still make this house a better place Jumpy, Luna, Cleo Dotty, Kira, every one Five rat ladies Five good hearts And Lord, we have our fun
