Inspiration
I made this as a smoky, late-night blues ballad for Karlach: all heart, all heat, and no patience for a “soft” ending. Her story has that brutal tension I can’t shake: a furnace where the soft should be, time running out, and still she chooses laughter, trash talk, and being fully alive. The “fixer with steady hands” is my salute to the people who keep you going when the odds are crooked: hammer, sparks, stubborn plans, and that quiet competence that buys you one more good day. At its core, this song is about refusing to fade politely. If the fire is coming anyway, then go out honest, go out loud, and don’t walk into it alone.
Lyrics
Smoke in the lamplight heat on my skin You walk in grinning alright let's begin Came up rough with a borrowed name Learned to laugh so I'd win the game Shook one hand signed one deal Sold my chest for a heart of steel Now there's a furnace where the soft should be And it wants the rest of me You look at me like I'm trouble I am But I'm the kind that keeps you standing Don't bring me perfect don't bring me slow Bring me a night with somewhere to go If the fire wants what it's owed Let it learn my name from the way I hold If I burn out I burn out loud Head up high and my people proud Kiss me quick then talk your trash I'll laugh through pain like I laugh through ash No soft goodbye no holy vow If I burn out I burn out loud And when the fire comes back around Don't let me walk in alone Found a fixer with steady hands Hammer and sparks and stubborn plans Bought me time I couldn't keep Every good day costs me sleep I joke like it's easy I tease like a game But you hear the shake when you say my name Don't tell me later don't tell me wait I've made my peace with a crooked fate If there's a door and it won't give way Lend me your shoulder we'll make it stay I'm not your saint I'm your stubborn sign The kind of heat that won't fall in line When the room goes quiet when the cheering fades I'll lean in close through the price we paid I found us a way out Not a prayer not a crown Just a blueprint I keep folded down A hidden forge a fighting chance Not hope just work just us just hands If I burn out I burn out loud Head up high and my people proud Kiss me quick then talk your trash I'll laugh through pain like I laugh through ash No soft goodbye no holy vow If I burn out I burn out loud And when the fire comes back around I'm walking in with you Smoke in the lamplight spark in the dark One stubborn laugh one stubborn heart
